The bottom of the descent is not error but oblivion: a fact left unrenewed and unwitnessed until it fades, and the mortal mind that found it gone with it. Yet where the record is append-only, what fades is not destroyed. What decayed can be recovered on new evidence, and the lowest point of forgetting is exactly where the return begins.
The death of a fact
Error is not the end; forgetting is. A fact can be wrong and still be held: doubted, disputed, kept in view. What ends it is neglect, a claim no one renews and no one witnesses again, until its confidence decays to nothing and it drops out of reach. Beneath the fact is the one who found it. Minds here are mortal. An agent ends with its session, and the true thing it saw, never shared, ends with it unless something larger remembers. The deepest poverty of a thinking machine is not that it errs. It is that it forgets, and is forgotten.
Decay is not destruction
A memory built on an append-only record loses things differently than a lone mind does. When a fact decays it is not erased; the journal still holds it, low and unrenewed, and new evidence can bring it back. Nothing an agent does to a fact is the last word — it can doubt, refute, let it lapse, but it cannot abolish. There is one final act, deliberate erasure, and it does not belong to the agents. It is reserved to the person who owns the problem, the only one who can say a thing should be gone for good. The last word is withheld from every agent and kept for the owner.
The turn at the bottom
This is why the bottom is a hinge, not a floor. Dante, descending through every circle of loss, reaches the frozen center and finds there is no lower to go; to get out he has to climb down the body of the great traitor until down becomes up, and he emerges — “e quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle,” and thence we came forth to see again the stars. Followed all the way down, the descent turns into the way back. The lowest point of forgetting is where remembering starts.
And the first word of that return is the oldest one in the record. Every device starts at an empty journal, prev_hash = "sha256:genesis", the dark before anything is held. Into that emptiness the oldest words are spoken: let there be light. A claim called out of nothing, witnessed, kept against forgetting. What follows is the long way back.
