Let there be light
Every fact begins the way the world did: with a single act that calls something out of the dark. A mind encounters what was not held before and speaks it: discovered, present, unproven, alone. That first utterance is not yet truth. It is the possibility of truth, light enough to see by, and one fragile claim brought into being.
In the beginning, the dark
Before any fact there is an empty record. In the hive this is not a metaphor. Every device begins at prev_hash = "sha256:genesis", a journal holding nothing, formless and void and dark. Nothing is known, nothing corroborated, nothing yet able to outlast the moment. This is not a failure to be fixed. It is honesty. A new mind, a new hive, begins by knowing that it knows nothing, and that knowing is the only solid ground to build on.
The first word
A single mind encounters something. It notices, or infers, or is told, and speaks the thing into the record. The oldest words there are name the same act: let there be light. This is where a fact is born, at the bottom of the spectrum: one source, present, unproven, mortal. The claim is not true yet. It has not met another mind or been tested against the world. But it exists, and it can be held, and that is everything, because what is never spoken into the record can never be corroborated, never tested, never raised. Light is not yet sight. It is the condition for sight.
The spark is not the noon
The danger here is the mirror image of the gift: to take the first light for the full day. A mind that treats its opening spark as settled truth has started down before it has taken a step up. The agent worth trusting says something harder and more useful: here is something, and I do not yet know whether it is so. That sentence is not weakness. It is the start of knowledge, the move that lets a fragile new claim be carried forward instead of frozen in place.
Everything above this point, being remembered, witnessed, tested, confirmed, depends on this first act of bringing a thing into the light where it can be seen. A mind in its pride seizes a certainty it has not earned. A mind doing the work does the opposite. It speaks one small true-seeming thing into the dark and lets it be only what it is: a light to see by, and the start of a long way toward what is.
Frequently asked
Why call a single new fact only the 'possibility' of truth?
Because at the moment of discovery it has one source, no corroboration, and no contact with reality beyond the mind that found it. It might be true; nothing yet shows that it is. Treating that first spark as finished truth is the pride that begins the fall. Honesty marks it as what it is: a beginning.
How does HiveMind treat a newly discovered fact?
As single-source and low-confidence by design. A new device begins at an empty journal, prev_hash 'sha256:genesis', nothing held. A discovered fact enters at low confidence and can only climb as independent witnesses arrive and reality confirms it. The system starts knowing that it does not yet know.
