Why you should never let your AI own the decision
An agent can gather, draft, and recommend, but it cannot carry the consequences of being wrong, so it should never be the one that decides. Let it do everything up to the call. Keep the call yourself, because the accountability for it lands on you no matter who actually made it.
An agent cannot carry the consequence
An agent can do almost everything a decision requires. It can gather the inputs, weigh the options, write up the reasoning, and tell you what it would do. What it cannot do is stand behind the outcome. When a call turns out badly, the cost does not fall on the agent. It falls on you, every time.
That asymmetry is the whole argument. Ownership of a decision is really ownership of its consequences, and the consequences are yours whether or not you were the one who made the choice. An agent that quietly decides has not taken the weight off you. It has only made it harder to see who chose.
Picture an agent that books a venue for a client because the dates lined up and the price looked right. The reasoning was sound on the inputs it had. But it did not know the client had a standing conflict that week, because that lived in your head, not in the data. The result lands on you, and “the agent thought it fit” is not an answer anyone you owe will accept. The agent optimized what it could see. The decision required something it could not.
Keep the call, hand off the rest
The mistake is treating “the agent did the work” as license for “the agent made the choice.” Those are different acts, and the second is the one worth guarding. Let the agent run the path all the way to the edge of the decision, then stop and hand you a recommendation you can accept, refuse, or change.
A recommendation is a gift; a fait accompli is a liability. The first leaves you a real choice and a moment to apply the context only you hold. The second presents the choice as already spent and dares you to unwind it. Agents should always be handing you the first. The moment one starts handing you the second, it has crossed from doing the work into owning the decision, and you have lost the seat without anyone announcing it.
This is not micromanagement and it is not staying in the loop on every step. It is reserving one thing: the consequential call. Agents propose freely and surface what they found and why, with that reasoning recorded so you can trace how they got there. You spend your attention only where it carries weight. The labor leaves your plate. The decision does not, because the buck behind it never left you in the first place.

What if the agent is right more often than I am?
